Apple iOS 5 released October 12, 2011 is turning into an epidemic of lost data and limited usage for iPhone users. Corporate help desks across the U.S. are being flooded with reports of all phone content being wiped after upgrade. Apple customers are beginning to complain and compare experiences on the Twitter Trend #iFail. The update also has a bug that drains battery life to an unconfirmed, but heavily reported duration of less than 8 hours of usuage.
For users who wish to upgrade, the following is recommended:
1) Backup everything on the phone to an external hard drive. There have been numerous reports of iTunes and iCloud backup failing and wiping all content.
2) Only use one iTunes to avoid problems with a mix of apps and content that may not be recognized by various accounts.
3) Use a Mac rather than a PC for the upgrade. iTunes has never been fully compatible with Windows and is the most common complaint for crashing and requiring partial or full restore of content to iPhone.
4) Remember to update iPad as well or there will be further issues that may wipe content as well.
IT professionals should alert all users. Given cost, trailing features, and various sync incompatibilities with corporate e-mail and portals, Matrixforce recommends Windows Phone or Android.
